In the 2019 Global Hunger Index, Pakistan ranks 94th out of 117 qualifying countries. With a score of 28.5, Pakistan suffers from a level of hunger that is serious. According to the World Food Programme, 43 percent of Pakistan’s population faces food insecurity. Of this number, 18 percent of people in Pakistan severely lack access to food. This is linked to the fact that most of these people are heavily dependent on agriculture for a living.
Furthermore, Pakistan also faces persistent droughts and other natural disasters which causes food insecurity and ultimately an increase in malnutrition. Keeping these facts in mind, Zaman Foundation decided to introduce a project, to contribute to the society by offering one free meal every day. ‘Dastarkhwan’ was started to address the chronic problem of hunger and to promote food security for the homeless and anyone who can’t afford a meal.
As part of the project we set up two places in collaboration with a small-scale restaurant to provide free meals at dinner time. One facility is located at Shahajamal and the other is situated in Dharampura.
OVER THE 6 YEARS, WE HAVE SERVED 1.2 MILLION FREE MEANS In order to serve quality food, we carry out regular assessments.
